instructions from NISENet!

We've enjoyed teaching The River Dynamics Experience class, offered free-of-charge to middle schoolers in partnership with the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, over the past year! Now, you can have fun creating a miniature model watershed using simple materials that you already have at home.

  • Be sure to make a prediction before you simulate each rainstorm, then discuss or record your observations.

  • Think about the fact that "what happens upstream" always influences the water quality and processes downstream. Why is it important to keep watersheds healthy?

  • How many states does the Mississippi River Basin drain before emptying into the Gulf of Mexico?

Remember...

A watershed is an area of land from which all water drains to a common waterway, such as a lake, ocean, or river. It includes the surface water and all of the underlying groundwater!
